<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> The Supreme Court on Friday ordered a member of House of <br> Representatives representing Akure South/North Federal Constituency of <br> Ondo State, Ifedayo Abegunde, to vacate his seat on account of his <br> defection from the Labour Party, which sponsored his election. <br> Abegunde defected from the LP to the now defunct Action Congress of <br> Nigeria in 2011. <br> In a unanimous decision by the seven-man panel led by the Chief <br> Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mahmud Mohammed, the apex court held that <br> a legislator's defection to another party could only be justified if <br> there was a division in the national structures which incapacitated <br> the party that sponsored his election, to function. <br> The apex court held that Abegunde's defection could not be justified <br> since his excuse of purported division in the Labour Party was not in <br> existence at the national level of the party. <br> </div>

When I am <br /> in the house, there will be a lot of things and people – especially <br /> visitors – to attend to. So, people will naturally disturb me when I <br /> want to compose songs. But the toilet is the only place where no one <br /> can disturb me. At times when I am there, I stay longer because I <br /> compose songs there." <br /> Obey, however, stressed that God is the source of his inspiration and <br /> that was why many of his songs are evergreen. He advised budding <br /> artistes and youths generally to be hardworking and believe that <br /> challenges and adversity are a stepping stone to success. According to <br /> him, he was once a labourer, clerk, vendor and an ice cream seller. <br /> He explained, "Anyone who wants to succeed in life should be prepared <br /> to go through certain challenges. In my early days, I struggled a lot. <br /> I was a labourer. I was a vendor and an ice cream seller. The bicycles <br /> that ice cream sellers rode in those days were bigger than what obtain <br /> now. Yet, I was riding mine up and down. <br /> "That time, I always prayed to God and asked: Why have you not <br /> answered me? We used to buy papers at Idi Oro, in the Mushin area of <br /> Lagos. By 2am, we were already on queue. The papers we were selling <br /> then wereDaily Times, West African Pilot, Daily Express, Nigerian <br /> Tribune and Morning Express.It was not easy walking up and down the <br /> streets selling papers. Vendors use horns now. Then, we had to shout <br /> on top of our voices." <br /> Obey, who is one of Nigerian musicians with the highest number of <br /> evergreen albums, said he had discovered his musical talent at that <br /> time but his mother did not want him to be a musician. It took his <br /> determination and a chance encounter with two old musicians, who gave <br /> him an opportunity to perform at functions, to get to the path of his <br /> musical destiny. <br /> On how he copes without his wife who died about four years ago, he <br /> said, "My wife is with the Lord. God called her in 2011. I miss her. <br /> There is no way you won't miss such a wonderful woman. But I know it <br /> is God who called her. And one day, I too will go and be with Him. <br /> Some people have asked if I am not going to remarry. But I say I have <br /> not been led to do so. My children and grandchildren have filled many <br /> gaps. All of them are around me. They are taking good care of me."</div>

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> Around 60 people have perished over ownership of a fishing pond in <br /> Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State. <br /> This is due to a bloody communal crisis between Ologba and Egba <br /> communities of Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State. <br /> <br /> The crisis began over a fallout of a lingering dispute between the <br /> fishing communities over a fishing pond. <br /> The latest crisis between the sister communities comes a month after <br /> the conflict in Egba community which claimed close to 100 lives when <br /> suspected Fulani herdsmen invaded the community.According to <br /> sources,"the truth is that there is no love lost between the two <br /> communities whose preoccupation is mainly fishing. <br /> "Unfortunately, the bitter rivalry between the communities and <br /> bottled-up anger for one another has lingered for several years and <br /> sometimes resulting in intermittent skirmishes; this latest conflict <br /> could have claimed over 60 lives because more bodies are still being <br /> recovered from the two communities. <br /> "As I speak to you today, (Saturday) the Egba people attacked Ologba <br /> during a funeral procession early this morning, after the Friday <br /> attack, just when the people were trying to bury their dead. So many <br /> people were killed in that attack and more bodies are still being <br /> recovered from the scene so we expect the causality figure to <br /> rise."Peoples Democratic Party's deputy governorship candidate at the <br /> last elections,Sir John Ngbede who hails from the area, revealed that <br /> communities have been having long standing issues. <br /> Ngbede also confirmed the recent crisis and said that many people now <br /> live as refugees at Obagaji, the Agatu Local Government Area <br /> Headquarters. <br /> When contacted, the Benue State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Hyacinth <br /> Dagala, explained that this was not the first clash and that the <br /> communities have been fighting over the fish pond for some time now. <br /> Dagala, however, pointed out that the latest crisis allegedly broke <br /> out as a result of deep rooted suspicion by the Egba community on <br /> allegations that the Ologba people had organised last month's deadly <br /> Fulani invasion against them. <br /> Th Police has however revealed that as of last count, the recorded 23 <br /> deaths due to crisis but they are yet to update the figures and the <br /> report as at press time.</div>
