A 29-year- old man, Ibrahim Odewale, was on Tuesday brought before an
Igbosere Magistrates' Court, Lagos, for being in unlawful possession
of cables belonging to an electricity company.
Odewale, whose address is unknown, is standing trial on a two-count
charge of conspiracy and unlawful possession.
Arraigning the accused, the prosecutor, Sgt. Babaji Ishaka, told the
court that the Odewale and others still at large committed the
offences on Feb. 7 at 1.00 a.m. at Federal Secretariat Area, Obalende
in Ikoyi area of Lagos.
"The accused had in his possession some cables belonging to an
electricity company and he was unable to give a satisfactory account
of how he got the cables.''
The offences contravened Sections 327 and 409 of the Criminal Law of
Lagos State, 2011.
It is reported that Section 327 prescribes a fine or six months
imprisonment for being in possession of item suspected to be stolen.
Section 409 prescribes at least two years jail term for conspiracy.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty, while his Counsel, Mrs G. N.
Lawani, urged the court to grant him bail on liberal terms.
In her ruling, the Magistrate, Mrs L.Y. Balogun, granted bail to the
accused in the sum of N100, 000 with one surety in like sum.
She said the accused must be gainfully employed.
The case has been adjourned to May 4 for mention.-NEWS 24
