<br />Displaced
 residents of Monguno, in Borno State, which was recently taken over by 
Boko Haram, have said they saw helicopters dropping arms and food items 
for the insurgents in the bushes.<br /><br />The IDPs, who said they spent 
about 48 hours in the bush running towards Maiduguri, expressed worry 
that the Boko Haram sect was not the only ones involved in the 
insurgency, but that there are many foreign fighters and some external 
supports.<br /><br />Leader of the Nigeria Vigilante Group in Monguno, 
Muhammed Sani,50, said he had, on several occasions, spotted unusual 
delivery of items in big wooden boxes by air, and sacks being dropped in
 the bushes around Marte and Monguno where Boko Haram terrorists were 
camped.<br /><br />“Even during the attack on Monguno, there was an aircraft
 that came but did not do anything, not even dropping a single bomb 
before it left; then another one later came around the Monguno barracks 
and we saw four men alighting from the aircraft, using a rope. The 
aircraft left, but we doubt if they were soldiers.<br /><br />“Even before 
then, some of my colleagues and I have been sighting helicopters 
dropping items in sacks and some in boxes to them at the camp of Boko 
Haram near Chikungudu and Kwalaram villages. Many helicopters came to 
drop items packed in boxes and sacks to the Boko Haram insurgents at a 
bush camp between Monguno and Marte; then we would see the Boko Haram 
gunmen rushing to the spot to pick the dropped items,” he stated.<br /><br />The displaced vigilante officials said those that attacked Monguno comprised hundreds of foreigners who looked like Chadians.<br /><br />“Many
 of them looked like Chadian Arabs – they were light-skinned with coiled
 hair, and there were many young men from Monguno – who Boko Haram had 
abducted when Nganzai was attacked last year – that were now active 
members of the sect.<br /><br />“While Boko Haram members that are former 
youths of Monguno were leading other insurgents to attack Monguno town, 
the foreigners were the ones engaging soldiers near the barracks,” he 
explained. <br /><br />Sani, who said he had lived in Monguno for the past 
20 years, said he fled amidst the hail of bullets when the terrorists 
became irritated by his anti-bullet charms that rendered bullets 
ineffective. His shirt and trousers were riddled by bullets, yet he 
remained unhurt, he said.</div>

Policemen
 on Tuesday chased away students of the Lagos State University who 
stormed the Lagos Governor’s Office to demand reduction in the tuition.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The policemen bombarded the students with teargas canisters and shot into the air in a bid to disperse them.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The protesters had arrived at the Governor’s Office in three BRT buses and blocked the entrance.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
They chanted anti-government songs 
before the policemen, many of whom were attached to the state’s Rapid 
Response Squad, swooped on them.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The policemen shot sporadically into the
 air and released teargas canisters into the midst of the students, 
causing them to scampering different directions.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The policemen chased the students to the
 other side of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, where they pitched near the 
Magodo Estate gate.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It was learnt that two students and the driver of one of the BRT buses were arrested by the police, while the bus was impounded.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The policemen later barricaded the road leading to the Governor’s Office from the Lagos State House of Assembly.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
President, LASU Students Union, Yusuf 
Nurudeen, said the students came to know why the state government had 
not announced the reduction in the school’s tuition after the committee 
set up by Fashola submitted its report on Monday.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He added, “We also learnt that the 
government will be meeting with the Governing Council of the school 
today and that is why we came. We were singing peacefully at the 
entrance of the Governor’s Office when the policemen started firing at 
us.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“It is sad because we came to hear the 
announcement of the reduction in school fees. The police cannot do this 
without the order of the governor.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The LASU SUG president said three 
students were injured and had been rushed to the Lagos State University 
Teaching Hospital, while two others were arrested.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He said, “They pursued and shot at us, but we will continue to protest.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
However, the Commissioner for 
Information and Strategy, Lateef Ibirogba said the State Executive 
Council had yet to conclude on the school fees issue, adding that by 
Wednesday (today) the government would probably make its position known.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He declined to say whether there would 
be reduction in the fees or not, insisting that the details of 
government position would be made known to the public at the conclusion 
of the matter.</div>

Students
 of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State on Monday paralysed 
activities in the university over hike in their fees.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The students, who assembled around 9.30 am, also locked down major buildings in the university.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Among the locked places were the Senate 
building, computer building and the main entrance gate that leads to the
 university campus.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
OAU recently increased the charges of its
 newly admitted students from N37,150 and N42,150 to N 82,400, N92,700 
and N95,700 (acceptance fee inclusive), depending on faculties.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The charges of old students of the 
institution were also increased from N5,300, N7,800, N10, 300 and 
N12,800 per session to N19,700, N30,700 and N33,700 for different 
faculties respectively.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“We have locked everywhere including the 
senate building; computer building and we are presently blocking the 
school gate. We are ready for the school management; we don’t care 
whatever happens to them there. The VC too is around, we want them to 
also feel what we are going through,” one of the protesters, identified 
as Sola, said.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Attempts by security officers to stop us
 (students) from locking down the Senate and computer buildings failed. 
We almost fought them too,” another protester, who declined mentioning 
his name told our correspondent.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Our correspondent also gathered that Muslims among the students also turned the main road to a praying ground.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“We have instructed the Muslims among us 
not to go for prayer. They prayed on the main road here. We already 
supplied them with water for their ablution,” one of the protesters, 
Akin, added.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Attempts to reach the Public Relations 
Officer of the school failed, but the VC of OAU, Prof. Bamitale Omole, 
had in a press conference, blamed inflation and sustenance of the 
institutions standard for the increment.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He also explained that the university had not got the ASUU/FG funds, which the students said should be used to provide relief.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He also stated that a Special Relief 
Committee had been set up to attend to indigent, but brilliant students,
 adding that the increment was “inevitable.”</div>

No
 fewer than three people were injured when a clash broke out on Jezza 
and Adaranijo streets in Egbeda, Lagos on Wednesday between motor park 
union officials and some thugs.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<em>PUNCH Metro</em> learnt that the cause of the clash was over the dues collected from motorists and motorcyclists in the area.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Our correspondent further gathered that 
one of the injured park officials, who was earlier rumoured to be dead, 
was now recuperating in a public hospital.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
During a visit to the streets around 
12.30pm, some of the shops on Adaranijo Street were still locked, while 
the traders in the few opened ones were seen in groups discussing the 
clash.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
One of the traders, who identified 
herself simply as Mrs. Omolaja, told our correspondent that she fled to a
 nearby residence during the clash.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
She said, “The clash actually started 
two days ago. We heard they were fighting over the money usually 
collected from commercial drivers at the park. With this money, they buy
 hard drinks, cannabis and disturb the peace of the area.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“On Tuesday, when they clashed, many 
traders could not come to their shops. They turned our places to their 
fighting base. I had to flee to a nearby residence for safety too. This 
morning (Wednesday) also, they were here again to cause trouble.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A landlord in the area, Alhaji Ramon 
Olujobi, explained that residents of the area had long been terrorised 
by the thugs whom he described as potential rapists.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Even before this recent violence broke 
out, they had always been using some shops as hideouts at evenings to 
perpetrate crimes. They lurk around the shops, drink and smoke till 
daybreak. Most young ladies cannot walk on our streets freely for fear 
of being molested,” he said.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Olujobi said the thugs broke several bottles and stabbed one another including an official of the park during the clash.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A fashion designer, who declined to give his name, said the streets had become synonymous with violence.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Most of my customers now call me on 
phone as they fear coming to the street. Their violent tendencies are 
working against us as we do not have customers again,” he lamented.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Meanwhile, it was learnt that policemen 
from the Gowon Estate Division were deployed in the area. They were said
 to have arrested four suspects while, many others took to their heels.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Lagos State Police spokesperson, 
Ngozi Braide, said could not be reached for comments as her phone rang 
out. A text message to the phone had yet to be replied to as of press 
time.</div>

The practice of seeking materials which are usually chemicals to lighten the colour of the skin is known broadly as bleaching.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This practice is often put to good use 
when it helps to remove or lighten skin pigmentation caused by birth 
marks, or some old injury that increases the amount of melanin in the 
local area of the skin. The result is that the skin is made lighter with
 the removal of the extra melanin.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It is called skin lightening, a pervasive
 practice among the dark-skinned races of the world. For many years, it 
was also a nearly exclusive preserve of the women with many of them 
engaging indiscriminately in the practice. In this century, however, men
 are increasingly participating in the practice. While some of these 
chemicals have been found useful in removing unwanted skin pigments, 
some others are not so safe. The safety profile of some of them has been
 questioned at many fora. That has added to the controversy surrounding 
their use among women and among certain ethnic groups.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There is a lot of evidence to support the
 suggestion that bleaching may be a harmful process. Among the poor, 
what is frequently available are cheaper products that contain 
hydroquinone and mercurious chloride, both of which are harmful. The 
latter contains a heavy metal, namely mercury, which is slowly absorbed 
in the system with no hope of eventual excretion. A slow poisoning thus 
results with permanent injury to the kidneys, the brain and the heart. A
 failure of any of these organs has no hope of repair except by having 
an organ transplant. Even so, the brain cannot be transplanted. That is 
not to mention the initial damage to the skin that reduces its quality 
and its ability to protect the individual from simple injuries and 
microbial invasion.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
On the other hand, it is often 
frustrating to have to suture skin lacerations in the emergency room of a
 woman who has bleached her skin red or pink in an effort to become more
 attractive. The wounds take longer to heal and the eventual result of 
such healing is poor. The scars are less satisfactory and such skin is 
also less like to heal primarily. The overall result is very 
unsatisfactory, and this applies to those wounds that do not get to be 
compromised further by bacterial infection. When an infection takes 
root, it is difficult to control and to treat and the eventual healing 
can cause some hideous scarring. Some have had to endure limb 
amputations because the infection they had could not be controlled and 
their lives were in grave danger.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As a result of these fears, hydroquinone 
was banned in Europe for many years and although it is available again, 
it is strictly a controlled substance available only on the prescription
 of a doctor. In many nations of Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, 
these products are available with less ethical controls and so can be 
assessed by all who have the relatively little sums of money that can 
provide them with it.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In Nigeria, a series of tests conducted 
on common skin lightening creams showed that they caused mutations in 
bacteria and were possibly carcinogenic. This is very sobering news 
indeed for all those people who engage in skin bleaching that if it is a
 practice they want to continue with, then they need to move away from 
these cheap substitutes to the better products that are free of toxins. 
Those products are much more expensive though, because of the costly 
ingredients that go into their production. There is a huge market for 
such products among the wealthy Asian nations of Japan, South Korea, 
Singapore and Taiwan and many of them originate in Europe. The average 
man or woman in sub-Saharan Africa who has less disposable income, but 
wants to appear lighter all the same, is condemned to continue using the
 cheap, toxic products available to their economic bracket.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In the end, it is of vital importance to 
use any bleaching cream wisely by following the instructions very 
carefully. Do not overdo its application because you believe that the 
results will be faster to arrive and do not engage in mixing different 
products because you are not schooled enough to determine what chemical 
interactions could occur between these compounds. When such interactions
 do occur, they may be severe enough to cause skin damage over and above
 what the manufacturer intended. This creates a scenario that 
complicates the management of any lesion that affects that kind of skin 
and certainly increases the challenge of taking care of it.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Also, some of these products are probably
 carcinogenic. In other words, they have the ability to induce the 
formation of certain types of cancer, and this has to be a very negative
 legacy arising from a desire to change one’s looks and perhaps become 
more beautiful. It is a supreme irony of the modern age that while the 
dark-skinned races want to increasingly become “white,” the Caucasian 
woman desires to acquire a tan in the sunny beaches of Africa, Asia and 
the Caribbean in order to get a shade darker and appear healthier.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
On the whole, it is wise to note that 
these creams are mostly in use to deal with certain types of skin 
diseases; to remove the skin stains caused by chronic liver disease; 
aging; or the effects of using oral contraceptives on the skin. The 
wholesale skin bleaching which many women and increasingly men indulge 
in today must be seen in the context of the wider health risks they 
engender as very damaging potentially. It is thus a practice that needs 
to stop or in the alternative have the people who believe in its 
usefulness to scale up their involvement by investing their money in 
proven products with an acceptable safety profile. Such products are 
more expensive without a doubt but the increased cost pales into 
insignificance when compared to the ruinous legacy of enduring a leg 
amputation or of dealing with cancer or of funding an expensive organ 
transplant. As the maxim goes, a word is enough for the wise.</div>
</div>

With the March 20, 2014 protest by Bowen 
University students still fresh in mind, not many would have thought 
that such violent demonstrations peculiar to public institutions, would 
soon play out in yet another private university.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But three weeks ago, a similar incident 
occurred at the Christian Caleb University, situated in Imota, Lagos 
State. It was barely two months after that of Bowen.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Whereas Bowen students had protested 
inadequate amenities and constrictions placed on them by the school, 
Caleb University undergraduates were protesting matters bordering more 
on religion.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In a dramatic event involving the 
school’s student affairs officer, male students went on a rampage after 
two Muslim students were refused the same privilege enjoyed by 
Christians on campus to pray in their respective ways.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
According to separate accounts by 
students of the institution who witnessed the incident, the event was 
only a trigger for frustrations that they had been going through, with 
regard to the school rules.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A 100-level male student, who preferred to remain unnamed, told <i>SUNDAY PUNCH</i>
 that the students were tired of all the “strict rules” the school had 
given them and complained that as a result, they do not have social 
lives.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He said, “It was sometime around 5pm on 
May 14. What happened that Wednesday afternoon was a proof that they had
 taken us as their slaves.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Our student affairs officer came to the 
male students’ hostel with a security officer and a hall administrator. 
They were moving from room to room, inspecting the hair and beards of 
male students and ordering those they thought should shave to do so.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“He then entered the room of two Muslim 
students who were praying. When he came in, he started talking to them. 
But, as one would expect, they did not stop their prayers to answer him.
 Because it is a Christian school, the man got angry.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“He started beating them. Then he took 
their prayer mats. He told them he was going to suspend them for two 
weeks. The men he came with also beat them. That was what got the male 
students angry.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He added that the students were angry at 
being treated like children and that they all came out of their hostel, 
shouting angrily that they would not allow their colleagues be suspended
 after the beating that they had already received.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He stated that officials of the school had done a number of things to upset them before that incident.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The fresher said, “After they had been 
told they were suspended, in anger, the students went about destroying 
property and school records.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He said a male student mounted stones at the entrance of the school, so no one could go out or come in.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He added that the dean of the college 
later came out to confront the students, in company with the dean of 
student affairs and the chief security officer.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“They started talking to us, not even 
listening to anything we were saying. The boys then got angry, because 
they were talking to the officials and were ignored.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“They started breaking things in the 
hostels, destroying doors, windows and computers. They went to the 
female students’ hostel too to destroy property. They destroyed things 
everywhere on campus, including the church,” he said.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
While noting that Muslim students in the school had not previously been warned against prayers, the student told <i>SUNDAY PUNCH</i>
 that other things that the students were upset about included water 
shortage, poor electricity supply, and the process of obtaining permits 
to exit the school premises.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Sometimes, there won’t be water. We 
would have to buy water sachets to have our bath. When they find that we
 are not dressed according to the school rules, they would still punish 
us, when we don’t have water to wash our clothe.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Also, they don’t give us sufficient electricity; some of the fans in the hostels aren’t working.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“We are given only two permits in one 
month. One permits the students to be out of the school and return 
before the end of the day. The other allows students to be out of school
 for a maximum of three days. Clearly, they don’t want us to have social
 lives,” he said.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He added that the students did not have a student union government.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Another 100-level student, who spoke to <i>SUNDAY PUNCH</i> also on the basis of anonymity, said he witnessed the event.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He said, “When the student affairs 
officer came to the male students’ hostel, he entered a room in the 
hostel and he saw two Muslim students praying. He asked them to stop. 
But, being Muslims, they wouldn’t stop until they were done with their 
prayers. So, they didn’t answer him.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He stated that the school official then yanked their prayer mats from under them and asked them to write down their names.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“He told them that he would suspend them.
 Other students came out from their rooms to see what was happening, 
when the noise began to grow.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Soon after, students blocked the 
entrance of the hostel with big stones. They said no staff member would 
leave the school. Later some officials came and wanted to apologise for 
what the man did.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“The students said they did not want 
anyone but the student affairs officer’s apology. I have never heard 
about such a rule since I joined the school in January. Since I came in,
 I have often seen Muslims praying,” he added.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
According to the student, at noon the 
following day (Thursday), the Visitor to the school, Dr. Oladega 
Adebogun, ordered all students to leave the school campus by 3pm and 
police officers were invited to ensure compliance.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“They (the school) sent text messages to 
each student’s guardian, asking them to pay N100,000 or N50,000 in 
damages (males and females, respectively),” he said.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The student noted that the incident 
marked the first time the official would come to the hostel, adding that
 the hall administrators do not disturb Muslim students when they pray. 
According to the freshman, students were not fond of the student affairs
 officer.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He said, “No student likes him. On the 
same day of the riot, he had threatened a female student with suspension
 in my presence, because she was waiting for another staff member 
outside her office.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“At the same setting, he threatened me as well with suspension because he felt my hair was not cut low enough.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He said though fellow students had often 
told him to ensure his hair was kept low at all times, he had not 
received a copy of the school handbook, despite having paid. He also 
complained about the school’s strictness in the area of religion.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Each student gets 100 points when he is 
admitted into the school. Every time he misses church service, 10 points
 is deducted. When all his points are exhausted, the student is 
expelled.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“The points are not meant for attendance 
at church services alone. It is also used as a means of punishment. Once
 a student is caught doing something unacceptable by the school’s rules,
 the school subtracts points,” he said.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
According to the Public Relations Officer
 of the university, Ms. Olusola Emiola, investigations are ongoing and 
until the rightful offenders are identified and sanctions meted out, 
“nothing will be said by the authorities on the incident.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
On May 15, the day the school was 
forcefully closed, the institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ayo Olukoju,
 stated that the action of the students prompted the “temporary 
vacation.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He had said, “We have rules and 
regulations in the school and all the students agreed to abide by them. 
These rules are in the student hand-out. Before now, we have been 
applying appropriate sanctions against students who default in any of 
these rules.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“We wanted to enforce one of such 
sanctions on Wednesday before this crisis escalated. The crisis has 
nothing to do with religion. It has nothing to do with being a Christian
 or a Muslim.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Olukoju noted that the religious link to the crisis was a “mere pretence,” adding that the school would reopen on June 2, 2014.</div>

A British man undergoing a minor operation was given a vasectomy by mistake.<br />

Doctors have tried to reverse the blunder, but the victim faces an anxious wait to see if he will be able to have children.<br />
<br />
The
 Telegraph reports that the incident occurred at Royal Liverpool 
University Hospital, which is affiliated with the National Health 
Service, Britain's public healthcare system.<br />
<br />
The man had gone in 
to surgery for a minor urological procedure, but doctors carried out an 
operation on the “wrong site”. They could now face a six figure 
compensation claim.<br />
<br />
"We can confirm a patient who was scheduled 
to have a different minor urological procedure was wrongly given a 
vasectomy," RLUH medical director Dr. Peter Williams said in a 
statement.<br />
<br />
"We have apologized unreservedly to the patient and we
 are offering him our full support. We greatly regret the distress this 
has caused him," Williams said.<br />
<br />
The man has not been identified and the NHS trust has refused to disclose his age because of patient confidentiality.<br />
<br />
Although
 vasectomies are considered a permanent form of birth control, it is 
possible to reconnect the tubes that are severed in the procedure.<br />
<br />
The success rate of reversing a vasectomy is generally between 40 and 50 percent, according to the Houston Fertility Institute.</div>
