Emir Of Askiria Narrates How He Escaped Being Kidnapped By Boko Haram Insurgents

The Emir of Askiria, Alhaji Abdullahi Muhammadu, has narrated
 how he escaped from being abducted by members of the Boko Haram sect. 
The
 emir, who is a member of the ongoing national conference, said this in a
 text message to the Deputy Chairman of the conference, Prof. Bolaji 
Akinyemi on Friday, 30 May, 2014. Earlier today, <a href="http://news.naij.com/67308.html">it
 was reported that some hoodlums, suspected to be members of the 
Islamist militants group, invaded the convoy of dignitaries going for 
the funeral of the late Emir of Gombe, Alhaji Shehu Abubakar</a> and made attempt to abduct some of the Emirs in the entourage. 
According to Muhammadu, who was one of the emirs, he made a narrow escape as the hoodlums descended on him and other emirs. While
 disclosing the news in Abuja today, the Assistant Secretary in charge 
of media and publicity of the National Conference, Mr. Akpandem James. 
said the conference was happy that the emir was able to escape.

“In
 response to a text message sent to the Deputy Chairman of the National 
Conference, Professor Akinyemi, the Emir who was taking a deep breathe 
after the miraculous escape, said, ‘My deputy Chairman, I’m most 
grateful, it was a narrow escape'. “Akinyemi in a solidarity 
message to the Emir said, ‘Your Royal Majesty, on behalf of the National
 Conference, please accept our heartfelt relief at the failure of the 
attack on your convoy. We thank Allah for your safety." James 
added that the deputy chairman also expressed the happiness of all the 
delegates over the escape of the Emir and whole heartedly condemned what
 he described as “cowardly and dastardly attack.” It was gathered that two other Emirs, <a href="http://news.naij.com/67308.html">the
 Emir of Uba, Ismaila Mamza and Emir of Gwoza, Idrisa Tinta, all in 
Borno State, were not so lucky as they were kidnapped during the attack</a>. As

Eight Facebook Users Sentenced To 123 Years In Jail In iran

An Iranian court has sentenced eight people to a combined 123 years in prison for various charges including insulting the country’s supreme leader on Facebook. The sentencing is the latest in a recent crackdown on Internet freedom in the country. The eight, who were reportedly all Facebook users, were arrested last year by the Cyber Unit of the Revolutionary Guard. The Revolutionary Court in Tehran doled out prison sentences ranging from seven to 20 years for charges of blasphemy, propaganda against the Iranian state, spreading lies, and insulting Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The arrests were first reported by the opposition news agency Kaleme. For Iranian human rights experts, the sentences are unusually harsh and could signal an intention to warn other Iranian netizens. “The ruling [...] is clearly intended to spread fear among Internet users in Iran, and dissuade Iranians from stepping outside strict state controls on cyberspace,” wrote the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran in a statement . One of the eight, a British woman named Roya Saberinejad Nobakht, received a sentence of 20 years in prison. Her husband said in April that she had been detained in Iran over comments she had made to friends on Facebook and in online chat, calling Iran’s government too controlling and “too Islamic,” as reported at the time by the Manchester Evening News. Gissou Nia, the executive director of the The Iran Human Rights Documentation Center (IHRDC), noted that the Judge mistakenly applied “a new and controversial provision” of the nation’s penal code and gave harsher sentences than would have otherwise been allowed. “20 years for posting on Facebook? For goodness’ sake. This is an extraordinarily harsh and disproportionate punishment,” she told Mashable in an email. “Unfortunately for her, the case was reviewed by Judge Moghiseh, a notorious Revolutionary Court judge who has had a long history of handing down extremely harsh sentences to activists, lawyers and journalists.” The British government acknowledged the arrest in a statement to Mashable, but declined to answer more specific questions. “We are aware that a British national has received a custodial sentence in Iran,” a spokesperson for the U.K. Foreign and Commonwealth Office said. “We are seeking to establish the full facts and are following up the case with the Iranian authorities.” Little is known about the others arrested, aside from their names and respective sentences: Amir Golestani, 20 years; Masoud Ghasemkhani, 19 years and 91 days; Fariborz Kardarfar, 18 years and 91 days; Seyed Masoud Seyed Talebi, 15 years and one day; Amin Akramipour, 13 years; Mehdi Reyshahri, 11 years; and Naghmeh Shahisavandi Shirazi, 7 years and 91 days.

Stop Abusing My Husband, Patience Tells Nigerians

Wife of President Goodluck Jonathan, Patience, on Tuesday advised Nigerians to desist from abusing her husband because God Himself made him the head of the nation. Patience gave the advice while addressing children at an event she organised to mark the 2014 Children’s Day at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The children used the occasion to send letters of protest to the Boko Haram sect and President Goodluck Jonathan on the need to release the abducted girls. The letters were given to Mrs. Jonathan for onward delivery to her husband and members of the sect. The President’s wife however said since she did not know members of the sect, she would forward the children’s letters to the National Security Adviser or the Chief of Defence Staff. “Let me thank the children that gave me a letter to give Boko Haram. Well, I have received your letter, but I am not the one to give it to Boko Haram because I don’t know Boko Haram and I have never seen Boko Haram. But I will give it to the NSS or the Chief of Defence Staff who will submit your letter accordingly. “To my children, thank you for your letter. Thank you for your deliberation. I have received what you gave to me. I will make sure I pass it to the President because it is addressed to him and the other one is addressed to Boko Haram. That is why the two are different,” she added. Earlier, Patience had told the children that God’s instruction to mankind to honour their parents was not limited to their biological parents only. She said, “It is bad to abuse our country and the President because God has made him the head. “The Almighty God commands us to pray for our leaders. We therefore need to pray for the development of our country and the President. “Remember that a child that abuses his father and mother is disobeying God’s commandment because the Bible says in Exodus 20:12 that you should honour your father and mother so that you may live long in the land that the Lord your God has given you.” She assured the children and adults who attended the event that the Federal Government was doing all within its powers to secure the release of the over 200 schoolgirls abducted from Chibok, Borno State. While calling on Nigerians to be united in the fight against terrorism, Patience also advised that citizens should learn to encourage soldiers who are at the forefront of the terrorism war. “It is the right of every child to go to school. It is only through education that you can be able to achieve your dreams and contribute meaningfully to your community and the nation. “We desire peace in our community and in our nation. I want you all to be ambassadors of peace in your schools and practise good manners. We have no other country than Nigeria. “We therefore need to be patriotic and committed to our dear country. We should strengthen our covenant with our country as outlined in the National Pledge. “Let us therefore be united in fighting terrorism. We should encourage our soldiers who are in the frontline to rescue our beloved daughters,” she said.

Chibokgirls: Four More Girls Escape From BH Camp

Four girls out of the 168 students of Government Girls Secondary School,
 Chibok, Borno State, that were abducted by Boko Haram in April, have 
escaped. The Chairman, Chibok Local Government Area, Mr. Bana 
Lawan, announced this on Tuesday in Abuja at a one-day stakeholders 
meeting for validation of draft humanitarian response plan for the 
abducted girls. The meeting was organised by the National Emergency 
Management Agency. Lawan, who was represented by the Director for
 Personnel and Management, Mr. Musa Elijah, said the number of escapees 
had risen to 57 as against 53, while 164 girls were still held by the 
terrorist group. He said, “The people of Chibok are anxiously 
waiting for the safe return of their children. Except for the 
unfortunate situation where two of the parents have passed on. They were
 known to have BP (blood pressure) issues, although I am not a medical 
expert, but they will not be opportuned to welcome back their daughters. “Latest
 report reaching us is that instead of 53, those that have escaped are 
now 57 and those remaining are 164 and not 168 as before. This is out of
 the 221 girls that were abducted.” Lawan explained that it was 
not all those who registered for the Senior School Certificate 
Examination in the school that stayed back. “Those that 
registered for the SSCE are not all that sat for the exam. Over 500 
registered and those who had relatives around decided to move to various
 places like Kaduna and Maiduguri to write the exams. Those that were 
left with no relations decided to stay back to take the risk and among 
them 221 were abducted.” The chairman said the moral of the girl child in the North-East was low as most of them were discouraged. “The
 school in particular has been existing for long and the quality of 
education in it has been diminishing. So I want to appeal to the Federal
 Government, through NEMA and the presidential committee, to intervene 
in rebuilding the school,” he added.

nightmare. From our unending national woes, down to the Chibok girls, 
then add the sudden return of hostilities in Jos, then you’ll understand where the singer is coming from. President
 Jonathan no doubt, may mean well for Nigerians. His Transformation 
Agenda is there even in Braille for the blind to see and admire. But 
that’s all there is! When the chips are down, you struggle to find a 
single action in favour of the largely impoverished Nigerians. Just like
 Ice Prince, you’re wondering about his sense of purpose and sincerity. 
You’re wondering if he is truly in love with this Nigeria. Take 
the World Bank startling revelation that 100 million Nigerians are 
languishing in extreme poverty and bleak future. This would have been 
enough to challenge any leader, but President Jonathan. He’s unruffled. 
He cannot lose his precious sleep over that. Just like he said about the
 Boko Haram insurgency, he’s not the cause! How about picking up the 
challenge? How about taking...say a salary-cut? Dreams. How do 
you even reconcile President Jonathan’s Kano jamboree barely 24 hours 
after an Abuja blast that claimed over 74 lives? Did he visit oblivious 
of his largely underperforming team? Reuben Abati may think otherwise. 
But, it is understandable. He has a job to do after all. Let the 
President take the initiative. Let him provide Nigerians with visionary 
leadership. Let those surrounding him take heed. Let them put a halt to 
the media campaign about some elusive achievements. Nigerians are no 
fools. Let them tell the President the true yarning and expectations of 
Nigerians. More than ever, let the President pickup the challenge. The
