I don’t have PVC,Action Alliance presidential candidate cries out

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: black;">A few days
 to the general elections, the Presidential candidate of Action
Alliance, Senator Tunde Anifowose-Kelani, on Thursday cried out that he
might be disenfranchised in an election in which he is a contestant
because he has not been issued the Permanent Voter Card by the
Independent National Electoral Commission.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: black;">He raised
the alarm at a press briefing in Abuja where he, however, expressed
optimism that AA would to win the presidential election.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: black;">Anifowose-Kelani
 said, “We are ready and our manifestoes have shown that we can
transform Nigeria for good. We will win the presidential election. I
have a challenge even as a presidential candidate; I don’t have my PVC; I
 must not be disenfranchised. I have made frantic efforts to ensure I
get my PVC, but all to no avail. I even wrote to INEC in respect of it, I
 have not received any answer from them.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: black;">“I hereby
appeal passionately for the release of my PVC so that I can perform my
civic rights and participate in 2015 elections fully as the National
Chairman of Action Alliance, and majorly as a presidential candidate in
the 2015 general elections.</span><br />
<span style="color: black;">I have made frantic efforts by going to my
 ward, Ward 8, Ibadan Boys High School, Oke-Bola Ibadan, to collect the
PVC but INEC officials could not give it to me.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: black;">“I came to
 Abuja on January 20, 2015 and made this complaint but INEC could not do
 anything. On January 27, 2015, at INEC meeting with political leaders, I
 lodged the same complaint and nothing was done too.”</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: black;">He further
 stated that, INEC is not ready for the elections as far as he is
concerned, because so many people have not collected their PVCs “and
they have not allocated another polling units to those whose polling
units were cancelled. It means the elections cannot be held so as not to
 disenfranchised those that want to vote.”</span></div>
<span style="color: black;">The AA
presidential candidate added that those that were clamouring for the
postponement of the general elections were wrong adding that,
“constitutionally, you can only shift an election by some weeks and the
handover date remains May 29.</span></div>

CAF punish AFCON ref, fine Tunisia

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
 Tunisia's football federation has been fined $50 000 and
threatened with a ban, while a referee has been sent home and suspended
for six months in the fallout from the team's chaotic African Cup of
Nations quarterfinal loss to host Equatorial Guinea.<br />
The
 Confederation of African Football announced its decisions after
disciplinary meetings on Monday and Tuesday about the on-field clashes
involving players, coaches and officials at Saturday's game.<br />
CAF
 said Mauritian referee Rajindraparsad Seechurn had been suspended for
"poor refereeing" after his decision to award Equatorial Guinea a
contentious penalty in the last minute of normal time sparked the
trouble.<br />
Tunisia players were guilty of insulting and trying to
assault the referee after the game. CAF said the country's national
federation president even went onto the field to confront Seechurn.<br />

 Hundreds of Boko Haram fighters are attacking Cameroonian
 troops at a border town with Nigeria, military officers said Wednesday
as Nigerian and Chadian jets pursued an offensive that has bombed the
Islamic extremists out of a slew of northeastern Nigerian towns.<br />
The
 attack on Fotocol, in far northern Cameroon, appears to be a response
to the air attacks, Nigeria's first major offensive against Boko Haram,
the Islamic extremists whose insurgency has spread across borders,
prompting international concern.<br />
The fight in Cameroon and the air
 offensives in Nigeria come as African Union officials meet in Cameroon
to finalize a mandate for a 7,500-strong multinational force to confront
 the extremists who in recent months have seized more than 130 towns and
 villages across three of Nigeria's northeastern states bordering
Cameroon, Chad and Niger. Boko Haram has held many of the towns for
months, some since August.<br />Chadian
 troops joined Cameroonian soldiers in fierce fighting Wednesday against
 the extremists at Fotocol, according to Cameroonian military officers
who spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to
speak to reporters.<br />
Earlier Nigerian jets started bombing Monday
in the Sambisa Forest, where the extremists have camps and first took
nearly 300 kidnapped schoolgirls last April, witnesses said.<br />
"At
night we hear distant sounds of explosions," Bulama Danbayo said by
telephone from Madagali town in Adamawa state. "We were all terrified
but some of the soldiers stationed here told us not to be worried, that
it was soldiers that commenced bombardment of Sambisa Forest."<br />
Chad's
 army said its troops were attacked Tuesday in Cameroon by Boko Haram.
"Our valiant forces responded vigorously, a chase was immediately
instituted all the way to their base at Gamboru and Ngala (in Nigeria),
where they were completely wiped out," spokesman Col. Azem Bermendoa
said on national television Tuesday night.<br />
More than 200 extremists were killed for the loss of nine Chadian troops, he said.<br />
Nigeria's spokesman on the insurgency, Mike Omeri, said the twin towns were recaptured but gave no credit to Chadian forces.<br />
In
 a statement Tuesday, Omeri said Nigerian forces this week have
"liberated from Boko Haram presence" more than a dozen northeastern
towns.<br />

A new report has listed First Bank of
Nigeria Limited, Zenith Bank Plc, Guaranty Trust Bank and Access Bank
Plc among the top 500 banks in the world.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The United Kingdom-based magazine owned by the <i>Financial Times, The Banker, </i>and <i>Brand Finance</i>
 in London, in their annual 2015 top 500 banking brands, also ranked
First Bank of Nigeria as the number one banking brand in the country for
 the fourth consecutive time.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
According to a statement by the Country
Representative of the magazine in Nigeria, Mr. Kunle Ogedengbe, First
Bank moves from being number 382 in 2014 to 336 this year.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Zenith Bank moved from 453 in 2014 to
388th position; Guaranty Trust Bank from 422 to 417; while Access Bank
made its first entry into the ranking.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The brand value of First Bank has
increased to $300m this year from $228 in 2014. According to the
Economics Editor of the magazine, Silvia Pavoni, the brand value is “the
 licensing rate that a third-party would need to pay to use that
company’s brand.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Pavoni also commented on the methodology
of the ranking, noting the Brand Finance obtained brand-specific
financial and revenue data; modelled the market to identify the demand
and the position of individual bank in the context of all other market
competitors; established the royalty rate for each bank; calculated the
discount rate specific to each bank, taking account of its size,
geographical presence, reputation, gearing and brand rating and
discounted future royalty stream (explicit forecast and perpetuity
periods) to a net present value which is the brand value.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This approach, the Economics Editor said,
 “is used for two reasons: it is favoured by tax authorities and the
courts because it calculates brand values by reference to documented
third-party transactions and it can be done based on publicly available
financial information.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Wells Fargo of the United States, the
report stated, retained the number one banking brand in the world for
the third consecutive year and was followed by banks in China, the
United Kingdom and Spain in the first 10. Wells Fargo’s brand value for
2015 was put at $34.9bn as against $30.2bn in 2014, whach showed an
increase of $4.7bn.</div>

Thierry Henry admits he cried when he
left Arsenal in 2007 and has revealed he was initially considered to be
Barcelona’s fourth-choice striker by Pep Guardiola.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
According to <em>Goal,</em> Henry, who
announced his retirement in December, helped guide Arsenal to two
Premier League titles and three FA Cup trophies, while he also remains
the club’s record scorer with 228 goals.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“I never considered leaving Arsenal.” Henry told <em>beIN Sports</em>. “But I was 29 years old and in form, I thought all the guys left and I did not know if Arsene (Wenger) would be staying.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“It was not easy and when I left I cried. I’m not ashamed to say it. I’m a competitor and I had to leave.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Henry joined Barcelona in a €21.3 million deal in June 2007 but insists he had to force his way into Guardiola’s plans.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“When I arrived at Barcelona, Guardiola
told me that I was the fourth-choice striker and I would not be
starter,” said the Frenchman.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“I accepted the challenge and I fought,
and competition makes you increase your level. People talk about luck,
but you need to create your own. When you work, you get the reward at
the end.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Henry also revealed the extent of his
struggles at Juventus, which prompted his move to Arsenal in 1999 after
just 19 appearances for the Serie A club.</div>

Homemade bomb explodes in Cairo, airport placed on alert

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
<br />Cairo airport authorities
tightened security after finding two bombs near the arrivals hall and a
homemade explosive device exploded in the centre of the Egyptian capital
 on Tuesday, security officials said.<br />

The target of the blast near a busy square in downtown Cairo was not
immediately clear. Two people were lightly wounded, security sources
said.<br />

“A relatively small homemade device was detonated not long ago in
Talaat Harb Square, which is one of the key central squares in the
middle of the city. It was detonated just on a side road off of that
square,” FRANCE 24’s correspondent in Cairo, Tom Stevenson, reported. “<br />

“According to the Health Ministry there were no casualties, which
gels well with what we know about the nature of the device. So it looks
like something that has certainly caused a lot of fuss and a lot of
fear, but hasn’t caused any deaths and certainly wouldn’t be bringing
down a building,” Stevenson added.<br />

The bombs at the airport were detected with electronic devices in the
 early hours of Tuesday morning. Airport security officials were
reviewing video footage to try and determine who planted the bombs,
security sources said.<br />

There has been no immediate claim of responsibility for either incident, according to Stevenson.<br />

Islamist militants seeking to topple the government have carried out
numerous bomb attacks on soldiers and police since the army toppled
president<a href="http://www.france24.com/en/tag/mohammed-morsi/" target="_blank">Mohammed Morsi</a> of the <a href="http://www.france24.com/en/tag/muslim-brotherhood/" target="_blank">Muslim Brotherhood</a> in July of 2013.<br />

Last week, Islamic State’s Egyptian affiliate claimed responsibility
for coordinated attacks in the Sinai Peninsula which killed more than 30
 security personnel.<br />

<a href="http://www.france24.com/en/tag/egypt/" target="_blank">Egypt </a>has
 been trying to project an image of stability ahead of an investment
conference in the resort of Sharm el-Sheikh in March that the government
 hopes will generate ventures worth billions of dollars.<br />

The bulk of attacks on security forces have occurred in the Sinai,
which borders Israel and the Gaza Strip, but the insurgency has spread
to other parts of Egypt, a US ally.<br />

Over the past year, police have frequently discovered homemade bombs planted near their vehicles and in public places in Cairo.<br />

Political turmoil and militant violence after the 2011 uprising that
toppled autocrat Hosni Mubarak have hammered tourism, a pillar of the
economy.<br />

President <a href="http://www.france24.com/en/tag/abdel-fattah-al-sisi/" target="_blank">Abdel Fattah al-Sisi</a>,
 who as army chief toppled Morsi and then launched a security crackdown
on Islamists, says Egypt is fighting a long, hard war against terrorism.<br />

The state makes no distinction between the Sinai-based militants who
have pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group and the Brotherhood,
which says it is committed to peaceful activism.<br />

Bird flu containment in Ogun Bird flu containment in Ogun

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The outbreak of the Avian Influenza Virus
 (bird flu) about a week ago has posed a great threat to many Nigerians
especially poultry farmers. The virus which is primarily a disease of
poultry, causing great economic losses to poultry farmers has killed
many live birds markets and destroyed lots of poultry farms in time
past.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Couple of days ago, the Federal
Government through the Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development,
Adewunmi Adesina, announced at a news conference in Abuja, that seven
states have so far reported the bird flu. They are Kano, Lagos, Ogun,
Delta, Rivers, Edo and Plateau states.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The minister, who noted that there had
been unusual mortality rate in two poultry farms and five bird markets
in Lagos and Kano states, said 140,390 birds have been associated with
bird flu exposure, with 22,573 (16 per cent) mortality recorded.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Meanwhile, Adesina said till date, 21
commercial farms, nine live bird markets and one private zoo have been
affected in the seven states.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In Ogun State, it was reported that two
locations are under watch, with one case positive and another negative,
while the 1,030 birds currently under watch in the two locations, 163
(15 per cent) experienced mortality.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It was on that note that the
administration of Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State took urgent
steps to put in place necessary measures to contain the disease and to
ensure that poultry farmers in the state do not suffer untold hardship
due to the outbreak of the virus.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The state Commissioner for Agriculture,
Mrs. Ronke Sokefun, in a press briefing said samples taken from Sango,
Sagamu and Ifo live birds markets, tested positive to the highly
pathogenic Avian Influenza, otherwise known as HsN1 or bird flu. Another
 poultry farm on Obalende-Ikangba road in the Odogbolu Local Government
Area of the state also tested positive.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
All these affected poultry farms
notwithstanding, the state government had taken adequate measures that
would ensure the protection of public health and safety of the citizens.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Furthermore, Ogun State Government also
reactivated the emergency preparedness plan for the control and
containment of the virus by procuring disinfectants and transportation
logistics, while its officers have been able to contain the disease at
the three markets where the virus had been discovered.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Also, efforts are in top gear to look out
 for more of such outbreaks through the surveillance system of the
veterinary department of the state Ministry of Agriculture which
implements disease containment measures of the state.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
More so, Ogun State Government is working
 closely with Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the
 Veterinary Research Institute, collaborating with the Poultry
Association of Nigeria, Ogun State branch, the Federal Ministry of
Health amongst others.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It’s also necessary to note that, the
Chairman Poultry Association of Nigeria, Ogun State chapter led by Dr.
Olalekan Odunsi, said the association had held stakeholders’ meeting on
ways to contain the virus.</div>
