Policemen
 on Tuesday chased away students of the Lagos State University who 
stormed the Lagos Governor’s Office to demand reduction in the tuition.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The policemen bombarded the students with teargas canisters and shot into the air in a bid to disperse them.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The protesters had arrived at the Governor’s Office in three BRT buses and blocked the entrance.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
They chanted anti-government songs 
before the policemen, many of whom were attached to the state’s Rapid 
Response Squad, swooped on them.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The policemen shot sporadically into the
 air and released teargas canisters into the midst of the students, 
causing them to scampering different directions.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The policemen chased the students to the
 other side of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, where they pitched near the 
Magodo Estate gate.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It was learnt that two students and the driver of one of the BRT buses were arrested by the police, while the bus was impounded.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The policemen later barricaded the road leading to the Governor’s Office from the Lagos State House of Assembly.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
President, LASU Students Union, Yusuf 
Nurudeen, said the students came to know why the state government had 
not announced the reduction in the school’s tuition after the committee 
set up by Fashola submitted its report on Monday.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He added, “We also learnt that the 
government will be meeting with the Governing Council of the school 
today and that is why we came. We were singing peacefully at the 
entrance of the Governor’s Office when the policemen started firing at 
us.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“It is sad because we came to hear the 
announcement of the reduction in school fees. The police cannot do this 
without the order of the governor.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The LASU SUG president said three 
students were injured and had been rushed to the Lagos State University 
Teaching Hospital, while two others were arrested.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He said, “They pursued and shot at us, but we will continue to protest.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
However, the Commissioner for 
Information and Strategy, Lateef Ibirogba said the State Executive 
Council had yet to conclude on the school fees issue, adding that by 
Wednesday (today) the government would probably make its position known.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He declined to say whether there would 
be reduction in the fees or not, insisting that the details of 
government position would be made known to the public at the conclusion 
of the matter.</div>

Students
 of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State on Monday paralysed 
activities in the university over hike in their fees.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The students, who assembled around 9.30 am, also locked down major buildings in the university.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Among the locked places were the Senate 
building, computer building and the main entrance gate that leads to the
 university campus.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
OAU recently increased the charges of its
 newly admitted students from N37,150 and N42,150 to N 82,400, N92,700 
and N95,700 (acceptance fee inclusive), depending on faculties.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The charges of old students of the 
institution were also increased from N5,300, N7,800, N10, 300 and 
N12,800 per session to N19,700, N30,700 and N33,700 for different 
faculties respectively.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“We have locked everywhere including the 
senate building; computer building and we are presently blocking the 
school gate. We are ready for the school management; we don’t care 
whatever happens to them there. The VC too is around, we want them to 
also feel what we are going through,” one of the protesters, identified 
as Sola, said.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Attempts by security officers to stop us
 (students) from locking down the Senate and computer buildings failed. 
We almost fought them too,” another protester, who declined mentioning 
his name told our correspondent.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Our correspondent also gathered that Muslims among the students also turned the main road to a praying ground.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“We have instructed the Muslims among us 
not to go for prayer. They prayed on the main road here. We already 
supplied them with water for their ablution,” one of the protesters, 
Akin, added.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Attempts to reach the Public Relations 
Officer of the school failed, but the VC of OAU, Prof. Bamitale Omole, 
had in a press conference, blamed inflation and sustenance of the 
institutions standard for the increment.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He also explained that the university had not got the ASUU/FG funds, which the students said should be used to provide relief.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He also stated that a Special Relief 
Committee had been set up to attend to indigent, but brilliant students,
 adding that the increment was “inevitable.”</div>

No
 fewer than three people were injured when a clash broke out on Jezza 
and Adaranijo streets in Egbeda, Lagos on Wednesday between motor park 
union officials and some thugs.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<em>PUNCH Metro</em> learnt that the cause of the clash was over the dues collected from motorists and motorcyclists in the area.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Our correspondent further gathered that 
one of the injured park officials, who was earlier rumoured to be dead, 
was now recuperating in a public hospital.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
During a visit to the streets around 
12.30pm, some of the shops on Adaranijo Street were still locked, while 
the traders in the few opened ones were seen in groups discussing the 
clash.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
One of the traders, who identified 
herself simply as Mrs. Omolaja, told our correspondent that she fled to a
 nearby residence during the clash.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
She said, “The clash actually started 
two days ago. We heard they were fighting over the money usually 
collected from commercial drivers at the park. With this money, they buy
 hard drinks, cannabis and disturb the peace of the area.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“On Tuesday, when they clashed, many 
traders could not come to their shops. They turned our places to their 
fighting base. I had to flee to a nearby residence for safety too. This 
morning (Wednesday) also, they were here again to cause trouble.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A landlord in the area, Alhaji Ramon 
Olujobi, explained that residents of the area had long been terrorised 
by the thugs whom he described as potential rapists.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Even before this recent violence broke 
out, they had always been using some shops as hideouts at evenings to 
perpetrate crimes. They lurk around the shops, drink and smoke till 
daybreak. Most young ladies cannot walk on our streets freely for fear 
of being molested,” he said.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Olujobi said the thugs broke several bottles and stabbed one another including an official of the park during the clash.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A fashion designer, who declined to give his name, said the streets had become synonymous with violence.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Most of my customers now call me on 
phone as they fear coming to the street. Their violent tendencies are 
working against us as we do not have customers again,” he lamented.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Meanwhile, it was learnt that policemen 
from the Gowon Estate Division were deployed in the area. They were said
 to have arrested four suspects while, many others took to their heels.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Lagos State Police spokesperson, 
Ngozi Braide, said could not be reached for comments as her phone rang 
out. A text message to the phone had yet to be replied to as of press 
time.</div>

Problems of skin bleaching

The practice of seeking materials which are usually chemicals to lighten the colour of the skin is known broadly as bleaching.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This practice is often put to good use 
when it helps to remove or lighten skin pigmentation caused by birth 
marks, or some old injury that increases the amount of melanin in the 
local area of the skin. The result is that the skin is made lighter with
 the removal of the extra melanin.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It is called skin lightening, a pervasive
 practice among the dark-skinned races of the world. For many years, it 
was also a nearly exclusive preserve of the women with many of them 
engaging indiscriminately in the practice. In this century, however, men
 are increasingly participating in the practice. While some of these 
chemicals have been found useful in removing unwanted skin pigments, 
some others are not so safe. The safety profile of some of them has been
 questioned at many fora. That has added to the controversy surrounding 
their use among women and among certain ethnic groups.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There is a lot of evidence to support the
 suggestion that bleaching may be a harmful process. Among the poor, 
what is frequently available are cheaper products that contain 
hydroquinone and mercurious chloride, both of which are harmful. The 
latter contains a heavy metal, namely mercury, which is slowly absorbed 
in the system with no hope of eventual excretion. A slow poisoning thus 
results with permanent injury to the kidneys, the brain and the heart. A
 failure of any of these organs has no hope of repair except by having 
an organ transplant. Even so, the brain cannot be transplanted. That is 
not to mention the initial damage to the skin that reduces its quality 
and its ability to protect the individual from simple injuries and 
microbial invasion.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
On the other hand, it is often 
frustrating to have to suture skin lacerations in the emergency room of a
 woman who has bleached her skin red or pink in an effort to become more
 attractive. The wounds take longer to heal and the eventual result of 
such healing is poor. The scars are less satisfactory and such skin is 
also less like to heal primarily. The overall result is very 
unsatisfactory, and this applies to those wounds that do not get to be 
compromised further by bacterial infection. When an infection takes 
root, it is difficult to control and to treat and the eventual healing 
can cause some hideous scarring. Some have had to endure limb 
amputations because the infection they had could not be controlled and 
their lives were in grave danger.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As a result of these fears, hydroquinone 
was banned in Europe for many years and although it is available again, 
it is strictly a controlled substance available only on the prescription
 of a doctor. In many nations of Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, 
these products are available with less ethical controls and so can be 
assessed by all who have the relatively little sums of money that can 
provide them with it.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In Nigeria, a series of tests conducted 
on common skin lightening creams showed that they caused mutations in 
bacteria and were possibly carcinogenic. This is very sobering news 
indeed for all those people who engage in skin bleaching that if it is a
 practice they want to continue with, then they need to move away from 
these cheap substitutes to the better products that are free of toxins. 
Those products are much more expensive though, because of the costly 
ingredients that go into their production. There is a huge market for 
such products among the wealthy Asian nations of Japan, South Korea, 
Singapore and Taiwan and many of them originate in Europe. The average 
man or woman in sub-Saharan Africa who has less disposable income, but 
wants to appear lighter all the same, is condemned to continue using the
 cheap, toxic products available to their economic bracket.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In the end, it is of vital importance to 
use any bleaching cream wisely by following the instructions very 
carefully. Do not overdo its application because you believe that the 
results will be faster to arrive and do not engage in mixing different 
products because you are not schooled enough to determine what chemical 
interactions could occur between these compounds. When such interactions
 do occur, they may be severe enough to cause skin damage over and above
 what the manufacturer intended. This creates a scenario that 
complicates the management of any lesion that affects that kind of skin 
and certainly increases the challenge of taking care of it.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Also, some of these products are probably
 carcinogenic. In other words, they have the ability to induce the 
formation of certain types of cancer, and this has to be a very negative
 legacy arising from a desire to change one’s looks and perhaps become 
more beautiful. It is a supreme irony of the modern age that while the 
dark-skinned races want to increasingly become “white,” the Caucasian 
woman desires to acquire a tan in the sunny beaches of Africa, Asia and 
the Caribbean in order to get a shade darker and appear healthier.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
On the whole, it is wise to note that 
these creams are mostly in use to deal with certain types of skin 
diseases; to remove the skin stains caused by chronic liver disease; 
aging; or the effects of using oral contraceptives on the skin. The 
wholesale skin bleaching which many women and increasingly men indulge 
in today must be seen in the context of the wider health risks they 
engender as very damaging potentially. It is thus a practice that needs 
to stop or in the alternative have the people who believe in its 
usefulness to scale up their involvement by investing their money in 
proven products with an acceptable safety profile. Such products are 
more expensive without a doubt but the increased cost pales into 
insignificance when compared to the ruinous legacy of enduring a leg 
amputation or of dealing with cancer or of funding an expensive organ 
transplant. As the maxim goes, a word is enough for the wise.</div>

With the March 20, 2014 protest by Bowen 
University students still fresh in mind, not many would have thought 
that such violent demonstrations peculiar to public institutions, would 
soon play out in yet another private university.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But three weeks ago, a similar incident 
occurred at the Christian Caleb University, situated in Imota, Lagos 
State. It was barely two months after that of Bowen.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Whereas Bowen students had protested 
inadequate amenities and constrictions placed on them by the school, 
Caleb University undergraduates were protesting matters bordering more 
on religion.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In a dramatic event involving the 
school’s student affairs officer, male students went on a rampage after 
two Muslim students were refused the same privilege enjoyed by 
Christians on campus to pray in their respective ways.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
According to separate accounts by 
students of the institution who witnessed the incident, the event was 
only a trigger for frustrations that they had been going through, with 
regard to the school rules.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A 100-level male student, who preferred to remain unnamed, told <i>SUNDAY PUNCH</i>
 that the students were tired of all the “strict rules” the school had 
given them and complained that as a result, they do not have social 
lives.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He said, “It was sometime around 5pm on 
May 14. What happened that Wednesday afternoon was a proof that they had
 taken us as their slaves.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Our student affairs officer came to the 
male students’ hostel with a security officer and a hall administrator. 
They were moving from room to room, inspecting the hair and beards of 
male students and ordering those they thought should shave to do so.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“He then entered the room of two Muslim 
students who were praying. When he came in, he started talking to them. 
But, as one would expect, they did not stop their prayers to answer him.
 Because it is a Christian school, the man got angry.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“He started beating them. Then he took 
their prayer mats. He told them he was going to suspend them for two 
weeks. The men he came with also beat them. That was what got the male 
students angry.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He added that the students were angry at 
being treated like children and that they all came out of their hostel, 
shouting angrily that they would not allow their colleagues be suspended
 after the beating that they had already received.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He stated that officials of the school had done a number of things to upset them before that incident.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The fresher said, “After they had been 
told they were suspended, in anger, the students went about destroying 
property and school records.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He said a male student mounted stones at the entrance of the school, so no one could go out or come in.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He added that the dean of the college 
later came out to confront the students, in company with the dean of 
student affairs and the chief security officer.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“They started talking to us, not even 
listening to anything we were saying. The boys then got angry, because 
they were talking to the officials and were ignored.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“They started breaking things in the 
hostels, destroying doors, windows and computers. They went to the 
female students’ hostel too to destroy property. They destroyed things 
everywhere on campus, including the church,” he said.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
While noting that Muslim students in the school had not previously been warned against prayers, the student told <i>SUNDAY PUNCH</i>
 that other things that the students were upset about included water 
shortage, poor electricity supply, and the process of obtaining permits 
to exit the school premises.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Sometimes, there won’t be water. We 
would have to buy water sachets to have our bath. When they find that we
 are not dressed according to the school rules, they would still punish 
us, when we don’t have water to wash our clothe.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Also, they don’t give us sufficient electricity; some of the fans in the hostels aren’t working.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“We are given only two permits in one 
month. One permits the students to be out of the school and return 
before the end of the day. The other allows students to be out of school
 for a maximum of three days. Clearly, they don’t want us to have social
 lives,” he said.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He added that the students did not have a student union government.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Another 100-level student, who spoke to <i>SUNDAY PUNCH</i> also on the basis of anonymity, said he witnessed the event.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He said, “When the student affairs 
officer came to the male students’ hostel, he entered a room in the 
hostel and he saw two Muslim students praying. He asked them to stop. 
But, being Muslims, they wouldn’t stop until they were done with their 
prayers. So, they didn’t answer him.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He stated that the school official then yanked their prayer mats from under them and asked them to write down their names.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“He told them that he would suspend them.
 Other students came out from their rooms to see what was happening, 
when the noise began to grow.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Soon after, students blocked the 
entrance of the hostel with big stones. They said no staff member would 
leave the school. Later some officials came and wanted to apologise for 
what the man did.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“The students said they did not want 
anyone but the student affairs officer’s apology. I have never heard 
about such a rule since I joined the school in January. Since I came in,
 I have often seen Muslims praying,” he added.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
According to the student, at noon the 
following day (Thursday), the Visitor to the school, Dr. Oladega 
Adebogun, ordered all students to leave the school campus by 3pm and 
police officers were invited to ensure compliance.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“They (the school) sent text messages to 
each student’s guardian, asking them to pay N100,000 or N50,000 in 
damages (males and females, respectively),” he said.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The student noted that the incident 
marked the first time the official would come to the hostel, adding that
 the hall administrators do not disturb Muslim students when they pray. 
According to the freshman, students were not fond of the student affairs
 officer.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He said, “No student likes him. On the 
same day of the riot, he had threatened a female student with suspension
 in my presence, because she was waiting for another staff member 
outside her office.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“At the same setting, he threatened me as well with suspension because he felt my hair was not cut low enough.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He said though fellow students had often 
told him to ensure his hair was kept low at all times, he had not 
received a copy of the school handbook, despite having paid. He also 
complained about the school’s strictness in the area of religion.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Each student gets 100 points when he is 
admitted into the school. Every time he misses church service, 10 points
 is deducted. When all his points are exhausted, the student is 
expelled.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“The points are not meant for attendance 
at church services alone. It is also used as a means of punishment. Once
 a student is caught doing something unacceptable by the school’s rules,
 the school subtracts points,” he said.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
According to the Public Relations Officer
 of the university, Ms. Olusola Emiola, investigations are ongoing and 
until the rightful offenders are identified and sanctions meted out, 
“nothing will be said by the authorities on the incident.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
On May 15, the day the school was 
forcefully closed, the institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ayo Olukoju,
 stated that the action of the students prompted the “temporary 
vacation.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He had said, “We have rules and 
regulations in the school and all the students agreed to abide by them. 
These rules are in the student hand-out. Before now, we have been 
applying appropriate sanctions against students who default in any of 
these rules.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“We wanted to enforce one of such 
sanctions on Wednesday before this crisis escalated. The crisis has 
nothing to do with religion. It has nothing to do with being a Christian

“I Have Made N60m Touring 20 States In Nigeria” — Oritse Femi

Speaking with a Punch reporter, Oritse Femi said 
he charges N3m per show and he could do 20states in a row, making him 
earn about N60m per brand concert. Here is how he explained it in his 
own words;<br />

“Things have definitely changed. Nowadays, I don’t 
charge less than N3m to perform at a concert. Sometimes the concerts are
 funded by multinational companies and we have to tour 20 states.<br />
<br />
Multiply N3m by 20 states and you will understand what I am saying. The situation has indeed improved”.<br />

Doctors have tried to reverse the blunder, but the victim faces an anxious wait to see if he will be able to have children.<br />

The
 Telegraph reports that the incident occurred at Royal Liverpool 
University Hospital, which is affiliated with the National Health 
Service, Britain's public healthcare system.<br />
<br />
The man had gone in 
to surgery for a minor urological procedure, but doctors carried out an 
operation on the “wrong site”. They could now face a six figure 
compensation claim.<br />
<br />
"We can confirm a patient who was scheduled 
to have a different minor urological procedure was wrongly given a 
vasectomy," RLUH medical director Dr. Peter Williams said in a 
statement.<br />
<br />
"We have apologized unreservedly to the patient and we
 are offering him our full support. We greatly regret the distress this 
has caused him," Williams said.<br />
<br />
The man has not been identified and the NHS trust has refused to disclose his age because of patient confidentiality.<br />
<br />
Although
 vasectomies are considered a permanent form of birth control, it is 
possible to reconnect the tubes that are severed in the procedure.<br />
<br />
The success rate of reversing a vasectomy is generally between 40 and 50 percent, according to the Houston Fertility Institute.</div>

Sudan Authorites To Free Meriam Ibrahim, Who Is On Death Row

Meriam
 Yehya Ibrahim Ishag, who gave birth to her second child being in 
custody on May 28, 2014, Wednesday, will not be executed because, 
according to the under-secretary of the ministry, Abdullahi Alzareg, 
Sudan was a country committed to protecting the women and that 
guaranteed freedom of religion.<br />
Khartoum has bowed to pressure 
put up by the U.K., other Western countries. Previously, the 
international community condemned the death penalty for Meriam, 
threatened to stop financial aid to Sudan, in case the judgement would 
not be reconsidered.<br />
The 27-year-old woman, whose father was a 
Muslim, was raised as an Orthodox Christian. She got married to a US 
citizen born in South Sudan, Daniel Wani, in 2011, according to 
Christian traditions.<br />
However, according to a Sudanese court, Ms 
Ibrahim must be regarded as a Muslim, as Islam had been the faith of her
 father. The court paid no attention to the fact that Meriam’s mother 
was a Christian and that the Muslim father was absent during convict’s 
childhood.<br />
The court had annulled her Christian marriage and 
sentenced her to 100 lashes for adultery because the union was not 
considered valid under Islamic law.<br />
The woman, however, refused to
 renounce her Christianity and, thereby, was sentenced to death by 
hanging for apostasy. The court further delayed the execution for two 
years, in order to allow Ms Ibrahim to give birth and to nurse the baby.<br />
The Islamic law, Shari’a, is in force in Sudan since 1980s.<br />
The
 case sparked heated debates on the issue of converting from one 
religion into another, and whether abandoning the Islamic faith should 
be punished.<br />

Brazil to declare no-fly zone over World Cup stadiums

The Brazilian Air Force will declare no-fly zones over World Cup stadiums to prevent terrorist attacks during this year's soccer tournament, but there's a catch: it can't shoot down intruders, for now.
By law, Brazil's military can only shoot at unresponsive civilian planes on drug trafficking routes near its borders, but not over densely populated urban areas where games will be played in 12 cities.
The Air Force is asking the Brazilian government to change the shoot-down law to allow effective defense of the air space during the 64 games of the June 12-July 13 global soccer tournament, said Air Force Brigadier Antonio Carlos Egito at a news conference on Friday.
In the meantime, the anti-aircraft guns to be deployed near the stadiums cannot be fired at a plane flying into a no-fly zone, said Egito, the military chief of air traffic over Brazil.
The Air Force and civilian aviation regulator ANAC announced that for security reasons commercial flights will not be allowed to land at eight airports that are within the 7.2 kilometer (4 nautical mile) no-fly radius around the stadiums.
The suspension will begin one hour before games kick off and last for 4 to 5 hours, though take-offs will not be restricted. They do not affect the country's main international airports.
The suspensions will mostly disrupt flights at Rio de Janeiro's domestic airport Santos Dumont and complicate the logistics of Brazilian carriers that have already sold 3,000 seats on flights that will have to be canceled.
PLENTY OF SEATS
The good news for soccer fans trying to follow their teams from one game to the next is that only 10 percent of seats have been sold on Brazilian domestic flights during the World Cup, ANAC president Marcelo Guaranys said.
Skyrocketing prices for flights during that period came down 25 percent in January from November levels, he said. Officials said that was because seats booked in blocks have been freed up by travel agencies seeing less demand than expected.
More than 600,000 foreign fans are expected to land in Brazil for the World Cup, joining an estimated 3 million Brazilians who will travel to games in other cities.
ANAC reported last week that renovation work is behind schedule at three major airports, Guarulhos in Sao Paulo, Viracopos in Campinas, which is 88 kilometers (55 miles) from Sao Paulo, and the airport of the capital, Brasilia.
To help reduce the crunch at airport terminals and aprons, the Air Force is lending its military bases for the arrival of VIP delegations and the 32 national soccer teams.
As an example of the heavy traffic to come, officials said Portugal's team will fly into Campinas, followed by a press plane with 200 journalists and four executive jets carrying their star player Cristiano Ronaldo and his family.
Civil Aviation Minister Wellington Moreira Franco told Reuters this week that Italy has been allowed to fly in and out of the Santa Cruz Air Force base near Rio to avoid traveling to the city's crowded airports.

10 Bodily Functions That Continue After Death

Death doesn't need to stop you from doing all the 
things you enjoy, as long as the things you enjoy are pretty basic. 
Certain bodily functions continue for minutes, hours, days, and even 
weeks after death. You will not believe the kind of things a dead body 
will do with its now-copious amount of time.<br /><br />By the way, this post is not for the weak of stomach.<br /><br />10. Nail and hair growth (by technicality)<br /><br />This
 is a technical function, not an actual function. The body doesn't 
produce more hair and nail tissue, but both of these things do 'grow,' 
in the days after death. What actually happens is the skin loses 
moisture (although cosmetics companies are probably hard at work making a
 cream for that) and pulls back, exposing more hair and making nails 
seem longer. Since you do measure the length of hair and nails from the 
point where they meet the skin to the tip of the hair, the hair does 
'grow'.<br /><br />9. Brain activity (with drugs)<br /><br />One of the side 
effects of modern technology is a blurring of the time between life and 
death. The brain can be almost completely gone, but the heart can keep 
pumping. If the heart is stopped for a minute, there's no breathing, and
 the person was dying anyway, most doctors just pronounce people dead 
while their brain is technically still alive for the next few minutes. 
The brain's cells spend those minutes scrambling for the oxygen and 
nutrients they need to stay alive - to the point where they often damage
 themselves irreparably even if the heart starts up again. Those minutes
 before the damage is too extensive could be extended, with the right 
drugs and under the right circumstances, to days. Ideally, this would 
give doctors a chance to save you, but it's not guaranteed. I know what 
most of you are thinking, "What fun! The biggest problem I had with 
dying is that it could be quick and painless, with no chance that my 
living brain is stuck inside a corpse for days on end." Well, now you 
don't have to worry about that.<br /><br />8. Skin cell growth<br /><br />This 
is another function of different parts of the body dying at different 
rates. While loss of blood circulation can kill the brain in minutes, 
other cells are not as in need of constant care. Skin cells, which are 
used to living on the outskirts of the body and grabbing what they can 
through osmosis, can stay alive for days. Its a good thing they don't 
have brains, or I'd feel sorry for them, the poor doomed things.<br /><br /><br /><br />7. Peeing<br /><br />Peeing,
 we think, is a voluntary function. And we're mostly right, except if 
something's really funny. Not-peeing, though, is not a voluntary 
function. We never have to think about it, because a certain part of the
 brain is always in charge of it. This is the same part that's involved 
in regulating a person's breathing and heartbeat, which is one of the 
reasons people tend to pee involuntarily if they're drunk. The part of 
the brain that keeps the urinary sphincter closed is inhibited. (More 
alcohol will shut down the part that regulate breathing and heart 
function, which is one of the reasons too much alcohol is dangerous.) 
Although rigor mortis stiffens the muscles, it doesn't set in until 
hours after death. Just after death, muscles relax, causing people to 
urinate after death.<br /><br />6. Pooing<br /><br />We all know that in times 
of stress the body eliminates waste, often in front of people or on 
camera. The body relaxes certain muscles and things just . . . progress.
 In the case of dead bodies, the whole thing is helped along by the gas 
that's produced inside the body. This can happen hours after death. 
Hours. Considering fetuses can also poop in the womb (it's true!), this 
may be both the first and last thing we do in life. Puts things in 
perspective, doesn't it?<br /><br />5. Digestion<br /><br />It turns out that 
when you die, bot only are you expelling stuff, you're actively making 
more. Or, at least, something is making more. We forget that we share 
our bodies with tons of other creatures, many of them beneficial. The 
bacteria inside your gut don't die just because you do. While plenty of 
them are parasitic, some of them are great aids to digestion, and do 
part of the work for us. They keep right on chugging, even when we're 
good and dead. Others eat into the lining of our intestines, making more
 of that gas that repulsed us all in section six, which pushes things 
along.<br /><br />4. Erections and expulsion<br /><br />When the heart stops 
forcing the blood around the body, it pools in whatever area is lowest. 
Sometimes people die standing up and sometimes people die lying face 
down. I think everyone here has enough spatial reasoning to understand 
what kind of blood pooling that would encourage. Meanwhile, for all that
 talk of relaxing muscles after death, it doesn't last forever. Certain 
types of muscle cells are activated by calcium ions. After activation, 
the cells expend energy putting the calcium ions back outside the cell. 
After death, the membranes become more permeable to calcium and the 
cells don't expend as much energy to push the ions out, so the muscles 
contract. This does lead to rigor mortis and can lead to expulsion. It's
 real. It happens. Now let's never think of it again.<br /><br /><br /><br />3. Muscle movement<br /><br />Although
 the brain may die, other areas of the nervous system may still be 
active. Nurses report seeing reflex action, which involves nerves 
sending signals to the spinal cord and not the brain, leading to muscle 
twitches and spasms after death. Some even say they've seen shallow 
chest movements after death. (Although maybe the doctor fell down on the
 job for that one.)<br /><br />2. Vocalization<br /><br />Our bodies are 
basically sacks of gas and goo supported by bones (which are filled with
 yet more goo). Rotting happens when bacteria go to work and the 
proportion of the gas increases. Since we carry most bacteria inside our
 body, the gas builds up inside. We've seen several ways it takes out. 
One of those ways is through the windpipe. Since rigor mortis stiffens 
all the muscles, including the ones that work the vocal cords, the 
combination leads to some very eerie sounds coming from dead bodies. 
People hear moans, groans, and squeaks coming from the dead, although 
why they stay around to confirm that the bodies making them are truly 
dead instead of peeing on the floor and running for their lives is 
beyond me.<br /><br />1. Giving birth<br /><br />Oh. Holy. Hell. No Twilight 
scene could be worse than this. Back in the day when people dropped like
 flies, a number of women died while pregnant, and sometimes in times 
that were too cold to give them a burial. This gave rise to a charming 
little term called 'coffin birth.' The gases building up inside a body, 
combined with the softening flesh, were said to cause the body to expel 
the fetus. These events were rare, and caused a lot of rumors, but were 
documented in times before proper embalming and quick burial. It sounds 
like the kind of thing out of an Edgar Allen Poe book, but it did 
happen. And it's yet another reason to be happy that we live in the 
modern world.</div>

One of the sons of former Oyo State governor, Rasheed Ladoja, died 
yesterday Thursday May 29th in a fatal auto accident on Eko Bridge.<br />

Adebola Ladoja, who was driving a Volkswagen Golf car, was heading 
towards Lagos Island around 3.30pm when a DAF truck said to be on top 
speed 
lost control, rammed into the median of the bridge and then rammed into 
his car, crushing it and killing Adebola on 
the spot.<br />

 could break into the vehicle. He was trapped behind the wheel with 
blood gushing out of his head as a result of the impact,” an eyewitness

Members of the presidential fact-finding committee on the abducted 
Chibok school girls yesterday May 29th paid a visit to Chibok community.
 In a statement signed by the committee spokesman, Kingsley 
Osadolor, the committee met with some officials of the Borno state 
government, including the Borno State Commissioner for Education, 
Musa Kubo, Chairman of Chibok Local Government, Bana Lawan, five 
district heads of the surrounding communities, Chairman of the Parent 
Teachers Association of the Government Girls Secondary School Chibok, 
the principal, parents of the abducted girls and some of the girls who 
escaped were all present at the meeting.<br />

In
 hushed tones, and cluster of twos and threes, they discussed the latest
 incident; men and women, decked in various outfits ready to embark on 
another voyage across the lagoon from the Majidun jetty in Ikorodu all 
the way to C.M.S in the heart of Lagos Island. Time was 9:00 am Monday, 
May 19, 2014 and the mood this time was far from what it used to be. 
News of a boat accident at Victoria Island two days earlier where one 
person, a lady identified as Claire, died and eight others escaped 
miraculously, had sent shivers down the spines of many.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
While scores elected to go by road on 
this day for fear of what is gradually becoming a frightening trend, the
 few others who kept faith with the system that sunny morning, did so 
with their hearts in their mouths. A handful in this category told our 
correspondent they were also worried about their safety travelling by 
this means of transportation.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“I also heard about the news of the 
accident, I am a little bit scared but I know that God will surely take 
control,” a woman who sat next to our correspondent in one of the boats 
headed for C.M.S, said. Several others looked extremely alert, rather 
than relaxed, as the boat throttled on vigorously, emitting fumes from 
its engine.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Today, exactly two weeks after the latest
 tragedy, there is still fear and apprehension in the air. Visits to 
jetties in other parts of the city like FESTAC, LASU-Ojo, Apapa, 
Liverpool, Lekki, Epe, revealed how poor traffic had become. The 
situation is a far cry from what it used to be. A lot of people are 
staying away for fear of a possible tragedy.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The accident on May 17 is the third major
 incident in less than three months this year on Lagos waters. Earlier 
in March, about 12 people died when a boat they were travelling in 
capsized in the FESTAC area while few weeks later in April, another nine
 perished in the Oworonshoki axis of the lagoon in similar 
circumstances. The boat, filled with workers heading home to Ikorodu 
after the close of the day’s business, sank after its nose hit a log of 
wood on its path. It took efforts of local divers and officials of the 
National Emergency Management Agency to rescue 22 others. For the 
survivors, it was a chilling experience – a close shave with death.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Bimbo Adamolekun, who lives at Oriwu in Ikorodu but works with an IT firm in Victoria Island told <em>Saturday Punch</em>
 during a conversation inside a BRT bus in the course of the week, says 
that he does not trust the system enough for him to patronise the local 
boat operators running the route.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“My colleague who lives in Ikorodu too 
told me about the ferry at Majidun and another one at Ebutte. But I am 
scared to even go there. I don’t know how to swim in case anything 
happens so I prefer to find my way through the traffic than to risk my 
life. As far as I am concerned, the water is not safe.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There are dozens like Adamolekun who the 
poor state of commercial boats and the rising cases of water accidents 
continue to scare away from the jetties.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Daniel Peters, one of the survivors of 
the FESTAC boat mishap, doubts if he’ll ever have the courage to go by 
that means of transportation again. The experience, he says, continues 
to hunt him.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“I just thank God for my life, the 
situation was not funny. We were more than 24 on the boat and the load 
was just excessive. It was the last boat for the day and everyone rushed
 in.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“As I was in the boat, suddenly, water 
started entering into the boat. At first it was like a joke but before 
we knew what was happening, the boat capsised. That was how we all fell 
under the water.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“It was battle for survival. I know how 
to swim but other people were pressing me under water. So, I was 
gradually losing strength. But when it occurred to me that I was going 
to die if I did not act fast, I mustered energy and swam with my last 
strength. That was how the divers saw me and came to my rescue.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“It was a miracle and I thank God. I 
don’t know if I will have the confidence to travel on boat again. I am 
afraid because I don’t know what might happen,” he said.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The growing cases of accidents, apart 
from causing panic among patrons of the water transportation system in 
Lagos, has equally raised fresh questions on the real state of many 
boats operating commercially on the waterways. Our correspondent took, 
through several boat rides, moved round to experience first-hand, how 
safe it was to travel on these mini vessels. The discovery, indeed calls
 for urgent intervention.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
At the Majidun jetty for example, most of
 the boats on parade were discovered to have gone past their best years.
 Even though some of the operators would claim they are in good 
condition, findings by <em>Saturday PUNCH</em> show that many of the vessels look old, ill maintained and are fast crumbling.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Navigational gadgets like radio 
transmitters, tracking devices, fire extinguishers and first aid boxes 
are missing in many boats plying Lagos waterways. The jetties are not 
also equipped to aid and monitor the operations of the boats, it was 
also discovered. In cases of emergency, accidents or attacks by pirates,
 locating a boat could be a tall order or an almost impossible task. 
Patrol boats are also an uncommon sight on most of the routes visited.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
According to the United Kingdom’s 
Department of Transport (Maritime and Coastguard Agency), a standard 
commercial boat should have lifebuoys, life jackets, distress signals, 
fire extinguisher, on-board communications and alarm systems, emergency 
lighting (hand-held) and medical supplies as basic equipment. These 
items which are key elements in safety practices are missing in nearly 
all commercial vessels in Lagos.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A boat operated by Bell Marine in which 
the reporter travelled from the Majidun jetty to Lagos Island in the 
course of the investigation, vibrated all through the journey as though 
it was about to rip apart. Signs of crack and weariness were visible all
 over its body. The floor of the boat, dressed with splintered planks, 
was almost an eyesore, shifting away from positions at regular intervals
 throughout the journey. You would almost beg to disembark at the 
nearest stop if you lacked the guts.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Though, every passenger got a life jacket
 before hopping on the boat, many of these safety vests were in 
questionable conditions, <em>Saturday Punch</em> observed. The situation is not peculiar to Bell Marine; it is almost the same across board.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
At Dominion Logistics, another licensed 
commercial boat operator also stationed at the Majidun jetty, vessels in
 different states of disrepair were seen anchored on the shore. A 
mechanic with the company, Feyijimi Friday, told our correspondent that 
only four of their boats were currently working. According to him, the 
high cost of purchasing and maintaining a boat, is among reasons why 
many of the vessels are overworked and eventually wear out.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“The boats are expensive,” he revealed. 
“To get a good locally built boat, you will have over N1.5m and 
sometimes you will have to buy the engine separately and the cheapest is
 N500, 000. It is not everybody that can afford this. That is why as 
operators, we repair and manage what we have.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
At C.M.S, another very active jetty, Jamiu Abiodun, himself a boat mechanic, told <em>Saturday Punch</em>
 that greed on the part of some operators was responsible for the 
terrible state of most of the commercial boats and the rising cases of 
accidents. According to him, rather than employ competent hands to man 
the boats, some owners, while trying to save cost, engage quacks who 
know nothing about the business.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“There are different types of boats and 
the prices are also different. There are foreign-built and local boats 
but because the foreign ones are too expensive, a lot of people go for 
the local ones. But the problem is that many of the operators don’t want
 to employ good captains who they will pay a reasonable salary.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“To get a good and experienced captain 
that can operate and maintain a boat well, at least that person will be 
paid N70, 000 monthly. But because many operators don’t want to spend 
money, they give the boat to people who they pay as little as N15, 000 
for a month. People like this don’t know anything about operating or 
maintaining a boat and that is why some of them look the way they are 
now,” he said.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It was a similar story at the Liverpool 
Jetty in Apapa when our correspondent visited. Operators were helping 
passengers into their fragile-looking boats – many in disturbing 
conditions. Without this strategy, one of them told our correspondent, 
the vessel could fall on its side. He admitted many boats here were old 
and weak.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
During the trip, the engine of one of the
 boats boarded by our correspondent stopped at intervals, coming back to
 life after some intervention from the man operating it. There were 11 
other passengers including a kid of about 10 years in this ramshackled 
boat which had a bucket ready to bale out water. The boat was leaking 
from three sides. It is nothing strange here and so the passengers cared
 less in spite of the apparent danger. But, it is far from the type of 
boat you expect to see on the waterways of a mega city.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Most commercial boats operating on Lagos 
waters are built locally with substandard materials that age too 
quickly. Standard specifications and other safety criteria are largely 
not considered by the manufacturers who also fail to put weather 
consideration in their designs. Engine capacity, another major 
consideration for a commercial vessel, is not also adhered to by many of
 the local producers as boats are fitted with engines whose capacities 
are not commensurate with the type of workload they presently shoulder. 
Windshields, wipers, headlamps are also given less attention – many of 
these items are not replaced when worn out. They are among factors that 
contribute in making an average locally-built boat a disaster waiting to
 happen.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Though, the Lagos State Waterways 
Authority, the agency saddled with the responsibility of licensing and 
regulating the activities of commercial boats, says it conducts a check 
to ascertain the sea-worthiness of the vessels three times in a year, 
many of the boats seen ferrying commuters across different destinations,
 still lack the basic safety equipment required for the business.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
When confronted with what LASWA was doing
 to address the rising cases of boat accidents in Lagos and why most of 
the vessels were in questionable conditions – far from what obtains in 
other civilised societies, Managing Director of the agency, Mr. Yinka 
Marinho, told <em>Saturday Punch</em> that the situation had improved a 
lot from the time the agency was established six years ago. He said 
though LASWA regulates most of the activities on major routes on the 
waterways, it is not totally responsible for all that happens as there 
are other agencies and outfits that also have oversight functions in 
this regard.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Part of our responsibility is to ensure 
that any boat coming in to take part in transportation business within 
the state must first be inspected by us,” he told our correspondent. 
“This agency is a regulator, a regulator of anything that moves within 
the waterways.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“So, our first job is to have the 
inspection team of LASWA look at the boat, check that it has all safety 
gadgets that we consider essential, check the sea-worthiness of the boat
 and we do this three times in a year for each boat that operates on our
 waterways.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“But when people want to pour blame on us
 for all the wrong things they feel are happening on our waterways, they
 forget that there is the National Inland Waterways Authority that also 
issues licences to boaters and controls a fair portion of the channels. 
So, we are not completely responsible for all that happens on the 
waterways and also round the clock as our operations only runs from 
6:00am to 6:00pm,” he revealed.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Earlier in the year, the Lagos State 
government outlawed night travel on its waterways. The move was part of 
strategies to improve safety and eliminate avoidable accidents. But 
sadly, boat operators and local fishermen continue to break that rule, 
exposing themselves and the lives of passengers to danger. The last two 
accidents, according to findings by <em>Saturday Punch,</em> happened at night, hours past the stipulated time for boats to ply the water channels.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“The Marine Police have more oversight 
functions towards the evenings on the waterways,” Marinho cuts in. “We 
are hoping to have some meetings with them where we can look at the 
whole issue of night travel and work out a systematic way to stop and 
enforce the ban on night travel.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“The waterway is a different environment 
at night due to visibility and the lagoon is so vast and so dark, there 
is so much that can happen that cannot be seen because of the darkness. 
Most of the accidents that have happened are at night when people are 
not supposed to be travelling. Everywhere in the world, it is emphasised
 that people should avoid night travel.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A top official at the office of the National Inland Waterways Authority, Marina, Lagos, told <em>Saturday Punch</em>
 that the agency was also taking measures to ensure safety on water. The
 official, who opted to remain anonymous, said the agency was 
cooperating with other relevant bodies to ensure things work 
appropriately for the benefit of all those patronising water 
transportation.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
At the moment, LASWA controls about 59 
jetties and landings covering 13 major routes and pockets of smaller 
feeder channels. Dozens of privately-owned commercial boats operate on 
these routes apart from the ferry service run by the state government. 
NIWA on its own controls four jetties but at the moment, only two were 
found to be active by our correspondent.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Apart from the questionable state of most
 of the boats running transport business across the Lagos waterways, 
almost all the ones checked operated first party insurance policy – the 
type that provides meager cover only for vessel owners and not for the 
passengers who are largely exposed to danger and need protection the 
most.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“The state is working on an insurance 
policy on all transportation modes. In the water business, most of our 
operators have some sort of insurance. We are trying to standardise it 
to have a better cover for all boaters.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“The insurance that the state will look 
at is mainly for the passengers. The boat operators would be in charge 
of their own vessels but our major interest is to cover the passengers,”
 the LASWA boss said.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But in spite the current safety question 
hanging over water transportation in Lagos and the poor state of 
commercial vessels, some commuters still prefer to stick to this system.
 Many in this category told our correspondent that regardless of the 
risk, they prefer to go by boat because it is faster and less stressful.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Already, the Lagos State government has 
started distributing free life jackets to boat operators and local 
fishermen in riverine communities. On Thursday, May 8, the government 
gave out about 2,000 life jackets as part of moves to promote safety on 
water. It is the first phase of the 10, 000 life jackets earmarked for 
distribution across the state. But industry watchers want the 
administration and relevant authorities to do more by providing good and
 well-equipped boats to further protect passengers and boost activities 
in the sector.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
At some jetties at Victoria Island and 
Ikoyi, though, vessels controlled by private and well established 
operators like the Metroferry Marine Services had a semblance of what a 
proper commercial boat should look like. The company, in its fleet, 
boasts eight-passenger ferries with seating capacity for 50 each, six 
“water taxis” with a capacity for 25 passengers, four-passenger 
transport vessels with seating capacity for 28. It is among a tiny few 
trying to change the face of water transportation in the state even 
though they are also miles behind when compared to what obtains 
elsewhere.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A visit to Bonny Island, Rivers State by 
our correspondent recently also exposed how far-behind commercial boats 
are in Lagos. The Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas company, as part of its
 commitment to the community, has provided well equipped and standard 
ferries and boats to move people from the island to mainland Port 
Harcourt, the state capital, at different times of the day. Passengers 
apart from enjoying maximum comfort while on board, were guaranteed 
their safety. From your seat, you could signal the captain where you 
wished to disembark. It is that easy and interesting. Jude Onwuleri-eki,
 a marine engineer based in Port Harcourt, believes this is the way a 
standard ferry or commercial boat system should operate. Sadly in Lagos,
 a city whose population swells by the hour, the situation is still a 
distant contrast.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In April 2012, the Lagos State government
 entered into a ferry manufacturing agreement with Aluminium Boats 
Company of Brisbane, Australia to build boats for its water 
transportation system. An initial batch of 60 ferries each with a 
200-passenger capacity was billed to be deployed across various routes 
to ease the stress of road movement. Two years on, the wait still 
continues. Only two boats of 54-seater capacity operated by the Lagos 
Ferry Company currently run commercially. Last year, the Governor, 
Babatunde Fashola, while inspecting some facilities at Mile 2 where 
construction work is ongoing, assured that retrofitting work being 
carried out on five 80-seater aluminium ferries to be deployed for 
subsidised water transportation would be ready on time to further ease 
movement. That promise is yet to be delivered one year after. All you 
see instead are rickety boats ferrying passengers daily on trips that 
could end in tragedy. Except the situation improves drastically and 
safety comes before profit, much of Lagos’ over 17 million population 
might continue to go by road in spite of the perennial traffic debacle 
than turn to the waterways which promises faster arrival at 
destinations.</div>
